"Insuring" Our Lawrence Legacy Lawrence-owned Insurance Policy
Susan Baker Ramsey '61 and Richard K. Ramsey '60
Lawrence opened the door for us to many opportunities. It was where we met, made lifelong friendships and received an incredible liberal arts education. As Lawrence students we experienced a sense of community in which we were challenged intellectually and encouraged to step out of our comfort zone. We continue to be grateful for the "total package" we received at Lawrence, which has made our lives richer and fuller.
There comes a time when you are able to give back, to return the favor, so to speak, for the many benefits received as Lawrence students and alumni. We wanted to say "thank you" and at the same time help underwrite the Lawrence experience for others.
With help from the Lawrence development office, we created a legacy gift on the occasion of our 50th class reunions. When we were first married and starting our family we purchased a series of life insurance policies to protect our family in case of an unexpected loss of income. Our children are now grown and the policies no longer needed. Our accountant suggested that we gift them for which we would receive an income tax deduction, a benefit to us. It was easy to do. We instructed our insurance company to assign the policies to Lawrence. Gifting these policies was the perfect way to pass forward something that had fulfilled its original purpose to be used to benefit the college that gave so much to us.
We are privileged to have had the opportunity to help others receive an exceptional liberal arts education by creating a legacy gift to Lawrence.
